For the next couple of days, I will be out of town staying with Patrick’s family. I will not have internet access.
Yesterday was the arraignment for the driver who killed Pat. Unfortunately, we waited for 2 hours only to be told it will be postponed until Friday morning. The full story can be found at WSBT.com.
Last Thursday, I attended a bike summit meeting that resulted in the founding of the Bike Michiana Coalition, a great group of energetic and committed people to a safer Michiana for bicycles. I find their mission to be critical. Pat’s death serves as a cold reminder of how urgent bicycle safety is!
Patrick was doing everything right. He chose to ride his bike everywhere he could for environmental, economical, and fitness reasons. He was lit up with 2 strobe lights, a headlight, helmet, reflective vest, and several other reflectors. He was riding in the road, according to law, as far right as practical. He was riding on a street that was practically deserted at 5:30 a.m. Patrick truly believed in a community that needs to be less vehicle-centric and more cyclist/pedestrian-centric.
The Bike Michiana Coalition is actively searching out ways to make changes. We need help! We need commitment! More dialogue and news can be found at www.bikemichiana.org. Jump in with ideas, opinions, and help!
My grief is still unsettling. Each day seems to be getting even more difficult as the reality sinks in deeper and deeper. I especially mourn for my children’s future without their Papa! My brothers and sisters and parents have been my lifesavers! What would I do without them?!
Thank you, all, for still supporting me.
